The Ajmer Municipal Corporation (AMC) began an “encroachment action” in the Dargah area on Thursday morning, clearing out over 50 shops. The initiative took place in preparation for Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti’s 813th Urs.

The operation, which targeted “unauthorized constructions and roadside encroachments”, led to protests, sloganeering, and conflicts between the local population and the authorities.

According to the Times of India, the shops had encroached on the main roads and even constructed a platform over the drainage near the main roads. The team then proceeded towards Andarkot, Nizam Gate, Dargah Bazaar, Dhan Mandi to Delhi Gate.

Along with representatives of the Municipal Corporation and a substantial police presence, several bulldozers rolled into the area around the Dargah.

The demolition started with stores and temporary buildings close to the busy market in the Dargah. Distressed residents hurried to the area as the sound of bulldozers echoed, shouting slogans and trying to stop the machinery. Tensions rose quickly as demonstrators formed human chains and confronted police officers attempting to maintain order.

The encroachments block roads and sewers, causing congestion during the Urs, which draws millions of pilgrims, said municipal officials, who defended the operation. They said that this step was necessary to guarantee pilgrims a safe and easy journey.

“A huge influx of enthusiasts attends the annual fair. Persistent encroachments have made movement difficult and presented safety hazards.”

The Dargah region has become a tightly secured zone, with barricades and police officers stationed at key places to dissuade further protests.
