United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Sunday urged governments across the world to strengthen protections for journalists, warning that press freedom is central to human rights, development and peace.

In his message marking World Press Freedom Day, Guterres stressed the critical role of independent journalism in democratic societies.

“All freedom depends on press freedom. Without it, there can be no human rights, no sustainable development and no peace,” he said.

He called on governments and societies to ensure the safety of journalists, adding that “the truth and the truth-tellers must be protected.”

UN Raises Concern Over Attacks on Media

The United Nations also warned that increasing attacks on journalists are a direct threat to freedom of expression and democratic values.

“Attacks on journalists are attacks on freedom of expression,” the UN said in a statement, highlighting the growing importance of reliable information in times of misinformation and global conflict.

UNESCO Stresses Role of Journalism

UNESCO, which leads the observance of the day, underlined the importance of journalism in promoting accountability and peace.

“Access to reliable, verified information is fundamental to building peaceful, just and resilient societies,” UNESCO said, cautioning that manipulated or false information can deepen divisions and erode public trust.

A Day to Reflect and Honour Journalists

Observed every year on May 3, World Press Freedom Day serves as a reminder to governments to respect their commitment to press freedom. It also offers media professionals a chance to reflect on ethical standards and the challenges facing journalism.

The day is also dedicated to honouring journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty and expressing solidarity with media organisations facing censorship or repression.
