The Amritsar Rural Police have arrested two individuals — including a serving Indian Army soldier — on charges of espionage and suspected links with Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
The accused have been identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi Fauji, who has been serving in the Indian Army since 2016 and was posted in Jammu, and Sahil Masih alias Shali. The arrests come just days after the deadly attack in Pahalgam, prompting authorities to ramp up surveillance on potential intelligence leaks.
According to Amritsar (Rural) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Maninder Singh, Gurpreet had established direct communication with ISI handler Rana Javed and was allegedly transmitting sensitive military data using USB devices. Police have seized two mobile phones suspected to have been used to maintain contact with ISI operatives. Forensic analysis reportedly confirmed the espionage link.
“This is a serious breach of national security. Our preliminary investigation shows that critical military information was being leaked across the border,” SSP Singh said in a press briefing. He added that the police are probing whether the suspects were connected to any broader terror network.
Sources close to the investigation revealed that Gurpreet may have had advance knowledge of the recent Pahalgam attack, raising serious concerns over how much intelligence may have been compromised.
Authorities are now examining whether any strategic data was shared during heightened military activity on the India-Pakistan border.
