Article 370, Triple Talaq: PM Modi Highlights Major decisions of 17th Lok Sabha

In a special address to the Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflected on the “accomplishments” of the 17th Lok Sabha, terming it a period of significant reform, performance, and transformation.

“These five years were about reform, perform and transform in country… Many reforms, that were game-changers, happened during this year”.

PM Modi underscored various “milestones” achieved during the tenure, ranging from the historic scrapping of Article 370 and the enactment of laws against Triple Talaq to hosting the prestigious G20 summit.

He highlighted the introduction of crucial legislations, including the Data Protection Bill, stringent anti-terror laws, the removal of obsolete laws, and the long-pending Women’s Reservation Bill.

Among the achievements, PM Modi credited the inauguration of the new Parliament building and the accessibility of the Parliament library to the public, symbolizing progress and inclusivity. He also emphasized the “government’s commitment to marginalized communities”, citing initiatives such as providing identity cards to 17,000 transgender individuals and recognizing their contributions through Padma awards.

Addressing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, PM Modi commended Speaker Om Birla for ensuring uninterrupted parliamentary proceedings while upholding the dignity of the House.

However, the highlight of PM Modi’s address was the abolition of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

“Many generations dreamed of one constitution but this house scrapped Article 370. People who had a role in creating the constitution must be blessing us today. The people of Kashmir were distant from social justice. Today, we took it to them,” he said.

In his farewell message to the 17th Lok Sabha, PM Modi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the nation through a “period of transformation” and urged continued dedication to the nation’s progress and prosperity.
