At least eight people were killed and several others injured after a powerful explosion ripped through a car parked near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday evening. The blast was so strong that it set multiple vehicles on fire and shattered nearby window panes, officials said.

According to the Delhi Fire Services, the explosion occurred near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort metro station around 7:05 p.m. “The blast occurred in a car parked near Red Fort metro station gate number 1. The intensity was quite high. Injuries are feared,” said a senior fire service official.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as flames engulfed vehicles and thick smoke filled the air. “There was a loud explosion, and suddenly everything was on fire. People started running and shouting for help,” said a shopkeeper in the area.

Seven fire tenders and multiple police teams were rushed to the scene to douse the flames and secure the area. Police have cordoned off the site and issued a high alert across Delhi as forensic teams began their investigation.

Visuals from the spot showed plumes of fire and several cars charred beyond recognition. Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the explosion but said all possibilities are being examined.

A senior police officer said, “We are investigating the incident from all angles. The priority right now is rescue and relief work, and ensuring there is no secondary threat in the area.”
