AAP MLA and former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi was appointed as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly on Sunday. This marks the first time a woman will lead the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, and for the first time, a woman LoP will face off against a woman Chief Minister, the BJP’s Rekha Gupta.

Announcing the decision, AAP MLA Gopal Rai said, “In the legislative party meeting, it was unanimously decided that Atishi will be the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly.”

Atishi expressed her gratitude to AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and the party, promising to hold the BJP government accountable. “A strong Opposition raises the voice of the people. We will ensure that the BJP fulfils all promises made by the Prime Minister and its leaders,” she said.

Atishi also said she was committed to ensuring that the Rekha Gupta-led BJP government delivers on key promises to women, including the Rs 2,500 monthly assistance.

Atishi, who succeeded Arvind Kejriwal as Delhi’s youngest Chief Minister in September 2024, previously handled critical portfolios like Education, Power, Water, PWD, and Services as the only woman minister in the last AAP Cabinet.

The appointment follows the BJP’s landslide victory in the February 5 Delhi Assembly elections, where the party won 48 out of 70 seats, ending AAP’s nearly 10-year rule. AAP secured 22 seats, while the Congress failed to win any.
