Samajwadi Party leader and former MP from Rampur, Azam Khan, received a significant relief from the court on Thursday, December 11, 2025. Khan, who is currently serving time in Rampur jail along with his son Abdullah Azam in two PAN card-related cases, was acquitted in an eight-year-old case concerning his controversial remarks about army personnel. The MP-MLA Special Court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to hold him guilty, clearing him of all charges in the matter.
The case was originally filed on June 30, 2017, by BJP MLA Akash Saxena, who alleged that during an election campaign, Azam Khan had made objectionable comments about army soldiers. After an eight-year-long trial, the court announced its verdict, acquitting Khan due to the lack of sufficient evidence.
Despite this acquittal, Azam Khan will continue to remain in jail along with his son Abdullah Azam, who is serving his sentence in the ongoing PAN card cases.
The court’s decision brought relief to Azam Khan’s supporters. Security was tightened at the Rampur Special Court during the announcement, with police monitoring the premises and keeping an eye on all involved parties. Following the verdict, there was a wave of excitement among SP workers who welcomed the acquittal of their senior leader.
