An imam was allegedly stabbed to death inside a mosque in Bihar’s Gopalganj district, triggering panic in the area and prompting the deployment of additional police personnel.
The incident took place at a mosque in Arna Bazaar under the Uchkagaon police station area. The deceased has been identified as Safiq Ahmed, a resident of Rudalpur village in the Bhore police station area.
Imam Found Dead After Azaan Was Not Heard
The incident came to light on Monday morning when residents noticed that the usual Azaan had not been given at the scheduled time. Concerned locals went to the mosque and found Ahmed’s body inside.
Police were informed soon after, following which a team led by Uchkagaon police station in-charge Dharmendra reached the spot and began investigating.
According to preliminary information, Ahmed is believed to have been stabbed during the night. His body was taken into police custody and sent for post-mortem examination.
Ahmed was reportedly staying at his in-laws’ home in Sisai and had been serving as the imam of the mosque in Arna Bazaar. He is survived by three sons, one of whom serves in the Indian Army.
Police Examine CCTV Footage
Following the incident, police teams questioned people living near the mosque and began collecting evidence from the area. CCTV footage from cameras installed around the mosque is also being examined to identify the suspected attacker or attackers.
Police personnel from several stations have been deployed in the area as a precautionary measure.
The motive behind the killing has not yet been established. Police said the investigation is underway and that further details about the circumstances of the murder and those responsible will emerge after the evidence is examined.
Authorities are also questioning local residents to determine whether Ahmed had any known dispute or threat before the incident.
