A lawyer was shot dead in broad daylight in a crowded market area of Bihar’s Katihar district on Monday, October 5, triggering panic among residents and shopkeepers.
The deceased was identified as advocate Azimuddin, also known as Guddu Ansari. The incident took place near Patel Chowk in Kumhar Toli under the Town Police Station limits.
According to police, Ansari was in the market when three men approached and surrounded him. One of them allegedly opened fire at close range before the attackers fled the spot.
Ansari sustained serious gunshot injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
CCTV Footage Captures Shooting
CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced online and is being examined by police as part of the investigation.
The footage reportedly shows the attackers approaching Ansari in the middle of the market. One of the men is seen pulling out a firearm and shooting him at close range before the group leaves the area.
Eyewitnesses also told local media that Ansari was shot before collapsing on the roadside.
Police have cordoned off the area and collected evidence from the scene. CCTV recordings from the area are also being examined to identify the attackers and establish their movements before and after the shooting.
Family Alleges Previous Dispute
Ansari’s family members have alleged that the killing could be linked to an earlier dispute.
A relative claimed that the lawyer had a confrontation at the local court around three months ago and had allegedly received threats following the dispute.
Mohammad Mumtaz Alam, a family member, also reportedly named a person whom the family suspects of involvement, citing an old dispute.
However, police have not confirmed the alleged motive or the identity of those responsible.
Police Investigating All Angles
Katihar DSP Vishal Anand said police had received information about the shooting and were investigating the case from all angles.
Police teams have been formed to identify and arrest those involved in the murder. Investigators are examining CCTV footage and other evidence collected from the crime scene.
The body has been taken into police custody for further proceedings.
Police said the exact motive behind the killing and the identities of the attackers will be established after the investigation progresses.
