The BJP’s Murshidabad unit has announced plans to construct a Ram temple in Berhampore, following TMC MLA Humayun Kabir’s recent proposal to build a mosque modelled after the Babri Masjid in Beldanga. Both projects have triggered political tensions in the district, known for its minority population.

The BJP plans to begin construction of the Ram temple on January 22, 2025, coinciding with the first anniversary of the Ayodhya Ram temple’s inauguration. Shakharav Sarkar, the BJP’s Berhampore organizational district president, confirmed that land had been identified for the project, which is estimated to cost ₹10 crore.

“We have identified a suitable site in Berhampore, and construction will follow the design of the Ram temple in Ayodhya,” Sarkar told reporters, signaling the BJP’s intent to boost its influence among the Hindu community in Murshidabad, where minorities make up nearly 75% of the population.

Earlier, Kabir, the TMC MLA from Beldanga, announced plans for a mosque in honour of the region’s minority sentiments. “The mosque will reflect the cultural significance of the Babri Masjid and honor the emotions of the local people,” Kabir said. However, his remarks have drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties accusing him of trying to polarize communities for political gain.

The TMC has distanced itself from Kabir’s comments, saying that the proposal represents his personal opinion. “The TMC has nothing to do with this statement,” a senior party leader stated.

The Congress also criticized Kabir’s remarks, accusing him of stoking divisive politics in a sensitive region.
