Just hours before a ceasefire agreement came into effect, Pakistani forces opened fire along the International Border in Jammu’s R S Pura sector on Saturday, killing a Border Security Force (BSF) officer and injuring seven others.

Sub-Inspector Mohammed Imteyaz was leading from the front when he sustained critical injuries in the cross-border firing. He later succumbed at a medical facility, officials confirmed.

A senior BSF officer said, “We salute the supreme sacrifice made by BSF braveheart Sub-Inspector Md Imteyaz in service of the nation.” The BSF’s Jammu frontier also posted condolences on X, honouring his courage and extending sympathies to his family.

The seven injured BSF personnel are undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Their condition is reported to be stable.

A wreath-laying ceremony will be held on Sunday at the BSF’s Jammu frontier headquarters in Paloura to pay homage to the fallen officer.

The BSF is responsible for guarding over 2,000 kilometres of the India-Pakistan border.

The firing incident occurred just before Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan. The ceasefire, effective from 5 PM Saturday, includes halting all military actions on land, air, and sea. The agreement was reached following a DGMO-level conversation between the two countries.
