An accident occurred in the Jammu district on Thursday, where at least 21 people were killed and more than 40 injured after a bus carrying pilgrims skidded off the road and rolled down into a gorge.
The mishap took place at Tangli morh in the Choki Chora belt of the district. The bus, carrying pilgrims from Kurukshetra in Haryana to the Shiv Khori area in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, rolled approximately 150 feet down into the gorge, officials reported.
Rescue operations were launched by police and local residents. The injured have been transported to the Akhnoor hospital and the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital in Jammu for treatment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating, “Anguished by the loss of lives due to a bus mishap in Akhnoor. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover soon.” He also announced financial aid of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
President Droupadi Murmu also conveyed her sorrow over the incident. “Pained beyond words to learn about the loss of lives in a bus accident in Akhnoor near Jammu. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I wish speedy recovery of the injured,” President Murmu posted on X.
