Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir remained on edge on September 10 after violent clashes broke out between protesters and security forces over the detention of Mehraj Malik, the only Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA in the region. Malik, who represents the Doda constituency, was detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA), sparking widespread anger and protests that spread to neighbouring Bhaderwah town.
The demonstrations, which began yesterday, continued throughout the day as security forces used baton charges and tear gas to disperse crowds. Several people, including police officers, were injured in the clashes. Among the injured was a former Block Development Council (BDC) member from Kahara. Authorities confirmed that some protesters, including women, were detained but later released in the evening.
With tensions high, the administration imposed prohibitory orders, suspended mobile internet and WiFi services, and deployed additional security personnel in Doda, Bhaderwah, Thathri, and Gandoh. Police vehicles were seen patrolling and making announcements, urging residents to remain indoors and cooperate with authorities. Concertina wires were placed at several locations to restrict movement and prevent gatherings near government offices.
In a further precautionary step, all educational institutions and most businesses in the district were ordered closed until Sunday, September 14. Only medical shops were allowed to remain open.
Malik’s lawyer, Appu Singh, told reporters that a team of lawyers has been finalized to challenge the detention, though he did not disclose further details.
Political parties across Jammu and Kashmir have strongly criticized Malik’s detention, calling it undemocratic and unjustified.
Despite the heavy security presence and restrictions, a senior police officer said there had been no major untoward incidents reported after the clashes. However, the district remains tense as residents wait for clarity on Malik’s fate.
