The upcoming Zila Parishad elections in Tiyali ward of Shimla district have turned into a larger social and political debate, with the spotlight on 22-year-old Akanksha, who is contesting from a women-reserved seat.

Akanksha, a Dalit candidate, is facing five rivals, including Priyamvada Singh, a member of the erstwhile Rana royal family of Ratesh. The contest has drawn attention beyond local politics, highlighting the intersection of caste, gender, and traditional social structures in rural Himachal Pradesh.

Controversy Over Shared Meal Sparks Social Tension

The controversy began after supporters from the general category visited Akanksha’s home and shared a meal with her. A video of the gathering circulated on social media and quickly triggered debate in the region.

While some people viewed the act as a normal expression of equality and democratic values, others objected, saying it violated local customs associated with the region’s deity-based traditions.

Some residents even demanded action under customary norms, arguing that traditional social practices had been disrespected. Others alleged that the gathering was staged for political benefit during the election campaign.

CPM Backs Candidate, Calls Incident Symbol of Equality

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) strongly supported Akanksha and defended the incident.

Senior leader Rakesh Singha said the party stands for equality in both principle and practice.

He said, “We believe in equality not just in words but in action. Sharing food with people from all castes and religions is completely natural in a democratic society.”

He further added, “The country will run according to the Constitution, not outdated social thinking,” stressing that there was nothing wrong in such interactions in a democratic setup.

Debate Between Tradition and Constitutional Values

Political scientist Prof. Rajinder Chauhan said the controversy reflects a deeper social divide between constitutional values and traditional caste-based practices still prevalent in rural areas.

He noted that many villages in Himachal Pradesh continue to be influenced by local deity systems, where upper-caste dominance often shapes social norms. According to him, such incidents expose how deeply rooted caste barriers still exist despite legal equality.

However, he also said such debates can encourage social reflection and gradual change. “When people begin questioning these norms openly, it creates space for transformation,” he observed.

More Than an Election Battle

The Tiyali ward contest has now become more than an electoral fight. It reflects the ongoing tension between modern democratic ideals and long-standing social hierarchies.

While the election continues, the controversy surrounding Akanksha’s campaign has turned into a wider conversation on caste, dignity, and constitutional equality in rural India.
