A Dalit family was allegedly brutally beaten in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh after they failed to meet a demand for wheat as a donation for a village temple.
The incident took place in Maharajganj village, where local strongmen allegedly reached the victim’s home demanding a fixed quantity of wheat in the name of a temple contribution.
According to the family, they expressed their inability to provide the amount being demanded, saying they had already contributed what they could afford. This reportedly led to a violent confrontation.
“If I give away my wheat as a donation, what will I feed my children for the rest of the year?” a member of the family said, describing their helplessness.
Family Attacked With Sticks, Stones and Rods
The victims alleged that the accused began abusing them and soon turned violent. Family members were reportedly dragged out of their home and attacked with sticks, rods, bricks and stones.

Women and children were also caught in the assault. At least five members of the family were injured, some of them bleeding, and were later taken to a hospital after approaching the police.
A video of the incident has surfaced on social media, showing visuals of the assault, which has triggered outrage and renewed concerns over caste intimidation in rural areas.
Victims Allege Loot and Organised Pressure
The family has named several accused, including Shyam Patel, Hardayal Patel and others, alleging that they not only assaulted them but also forcibly took away their remaining wheat.
They claimed that the vehicle used to transport the wheat has not been seized yet, raising questions about the investigation.
Family members further alleged that the attack was not a sudden dispute but part of an organised attempt to exert caste pressure in the name of temple donations.
Police Say Action Taken, Arrests Made
Police officials confirmed that action has been initiated in the case. Civil Lines Inspector Ashutosh Shroti said the incident began as a dispute over wheat collection for a temple and later escalated into violence.
“The incident stemmed from a request for wheat donations for a temple, which subsequently escalated into a physical altercation. The accused individuals have been arrested, and appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law,” he said.
Police have registered a case under the SC/ST Act against the accused. Four people have been arrested so far, while one accused is still absconding.
Family Questions Probe, Seeks Justice
Despite the arrests, the victims said they are not satisfied with the action taken so far. They have questioned why no action has been taken against those allegedly responsible for organising the collection drive and pressuring them.
