“Dalits, Backward Castes Not Getting Respect”: Bihar MLA Mishri Lal Yadav Resigns from BJP

Mishri Lal Yadav Dalit

Bihar BJP MLA Mishri Lal Yadav on Saturday announced his resignation from the party, accusing its leadership of neglecting Dalits and other backward communities. Yadav, who represents the Alinagar constituency in Darbhanga district, said he would formally submit his resignation to the party’s state president, Dilip Jaiswal.

“I have decided to resign from the BJP because Dalits and backward communities are not getting the respect and representation they deserve in the party,” Yadav said during a press conference.

The BJP has not yet issued an official response, but sources suggested that Yadav had been upset over reports that the party might deny him a ticket in the upcoming assembly elections and instead field singer Maithili Thakur from Alinagar.

“I won Alinagar for the NDA for the first time. In the past, many others with money and muscle power had failed to do so,” Yadav said, defending his record.

Yadav had contested the 2020 assembly polls on a ticket from the Vikassheel Insan Party (VIP), led by Mukesh Sahni. The VIP later split from the NDA in 2022 after Sahni was removed from the Nitish Kumar cabinet at the BJP’s insistence. Soon after, all four VIP MLAs, including Yadav, joined the BJP.

Although Yadav did not reveal his next move, sources close to him said he is in touch with leaders from the opposition INDIA bloc, led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
