Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi for praising Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on his birthday, asking whether he had thought about students who allegedly died by suicide following the NEET-UG paper leak controversy.
The Congress leader raised the issue in a post on X while reacting to Modi’s birthday message for Pradhan.
Rahul Gandhi Links NEET Crisis to Student Deaths
Rahul Gandhi said the students who died were victims of a “broken system” and accused the government of failing to take responsibility.
“Each name on this list was a child with a dream, a family, a future — all destroyed by a broken system and a government that refuses to learn or take accountability. Remember these students. Every one of them,” Gandhi wrote.
He further asked, “When PM Modi praised Dharmendra Pradhan ji on his birthday, did he even spare a thought for these children?”

His remarks came while sharing a post by Congress leader Pawan Khera, who listed 14 students that the Congress claims died by suicide in the aftermath of the alleged NEET-UG paper leak.
Khera wrote, “Dear Dharmendra Uncle, Happy Birthday. You turn 57 today. We couldn’t even reach half your age.”
PM Modi Praises Dharmendra Pradhan
Earlier in the day, Modi wished Pradhan on his 57th birthday and praised his role in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP).
“Birthday wishes to Union Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan Ji. He is making commendable efforts towards the implementation of the National Education Policy, which seeks to make India a hub for knowledge, learning and innovation. Praying for his long and healthy life,” Modi posted on X.
Opposition Demands Accountability
The NEET-UG controversy has remained a major political issue, with opposition parties and student groups demanding accountability from the Centre.
Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly attacked the BJP government over the alleged paper leak and examination irregularities, while opposition leaders have also sought Pradhan’s resignation.
More than 22 lakh students appeared for the NEET-UG examination this year, but the exam later came under controversy over allegations of question paper leaks and irregularities, triggering protests across the country.
