An eight-month pregnant woman, Rukhsar, was allegedly assaulted at Akbarpur Medical College in Kanpur Dehat when she went there for a routine medical checkup with her husband on Monday.
According to the complaint, a man named Rohit Yadav, who is said to work at the medical college and is allegedly close to the principal, accused Rukhsar’s husband, Usman, of eating gutkha on the campus. Rohit reportedly demanded a fine of 500 rupees. When Usman denied the accusation and refused to pay, an argument broke out.
The couple alleged that Rohit Yadav abused Usman, snatched his mobile phone and forcibly took 340 rupees from his pocket. The situation worsened when Rukhsar protested against the harassment of her husband. She claimed that Rohit then kicked her in the stomach. After the assault, Rukhsar reportedly collapsed and lay on the ground for around ten minutes. Her condition deteriorated, and the life of her unborn child was said to be at risk.
Usman alleged that Rohit Yadav regularly extorts money from patients and their attendants inside the medical college by intimidating them. He said they approached the police after the incident, but no immediate action was taken.
Adding to the controversy, the family alleged that doctors initially refused to conduct Rukhsar’s medical examination after receiving a phone call from the college principal. It was only after the matter reached Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Information, Pratibha Shukla, that action was taken.
Minister Pratibha Shukla visited the medical college, met the victim and intervened to ensure that Rukhsar’s medical examination was finally carried out. She assured the family that the matter would be investigated fairly and that strict action would be taken against those found guilty.
Police officials said they are investigating the case based on the complaint filed by the victim’s family.
