Congress MP Dr Syed Naseer Hussain has strongly criticised the action taken against Muslim schoolchildren and their families in Assam’s Goalpara district, where five students are reportedly facing expulsion, a minor has allegedly been detained, and the widowed mother of one of the children has been arrested over food allegedly brought to school.
Reacting to the incident, Hussain questioned the actions of authorities and accused the BJP-led government in Assam of creating an atmosphere of fear and discrimination.
In a statement shared on social media, the Rajya Sabha MP said, “Under BJP rule in Assam, even schoolchildren are not spared from an atmosphere of fear, discrimination, and polarisation. Schools should nurture young minds, not become sites of exclusion and prejudice.”
Questions Raised Over Police and School Action
The Congress leader raised several questions regarding the handling of the matter, especially the detention of a minor and the arrest of a widowed mother.
Hussain asked why a child was detained over what he described as a school-related incident and questioned the justification for arresting a mother when the issue allegedly involved schoolchildren.
“Why was a minor detained over a school-related incident? Why was a widowed mother arrested while the matter involved schoolchildren?” he asked.
The MP also questioned reports that five Muslim students may face expulsion from school, arguing that education is a fundamental right and children should not be denied access to it.
“How can expelling children from school be justified when education is a fundamental right?” Hussain said.
Allegation of Targeting Minority Families
Dr Hussain further alleged that the incident reflected a larger pattern of discrimination against minority communities under BJP rule. He questioned whether targeting children and their families from minority backgrounds had become an accepted outcome of what he called the BJP’s “politics of division.”
“No child should become a victim of the BJP’s politics of hate and prejudice,” he said.
The Congress MP urged government agencies and child welfare bodies to immediately intervene in the matter to ensure the safety and rights of the children involved.
Call for Immediate Intervention
Hussain appealed to national and state institutions, including the National Commission for Women (NCW), the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), and Assam welfare authorities, to take urgent notice of the incident.
He called on authorities to protect “the rights, dignity, safety, and future of these children” and demanded accountability over the reported action taken against the students and their family members.
