The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Kadian held its monthly meeting today under the leadership of state president Harmeet Singh Kadian. Office bearers and representatives of several farmer organisations took part in the meeting.

The union expressed strong opposition to the proposed Electricity Amendment Bill and Seeds Bill being introduced by the Punjab Government and the Central Government.

Kadian accused the Punjab Government of working in coordination with the Centre to pass the Electricity Amendment Bill. He said the move would be a betrayal of Punjab’s farmers.

He also warned that the Seeds Bill would destroy traditional crop varieties and open the door for hybrid seeds controlled by corporate houses. He questioned how farmers would continue farming if they lost control over seeds. He added that Punjab’s agriculture was already struggling due to climate related challenges and financial losses.

The union demanded that both Bills be withdrawn immediately. It warned that farmers would launch a large agitation if their concerns were ignored. Kadian said the responsibility for any unrest would lie with both governments.
