Cyber Police Kashmir has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Iltija Mufti and others over alleged circulation of separatist-related content on social media, officials said on Thursday.
According to reports, the case was triggered after a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Iltija Mufti featuring slain separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani came to the attention of authorities.
The FIR has been registered at Cyber Police Station Srinagar under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with acts that threaten the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India.
Other Sections Invoked in Case
Police sources said that the FIR also includes Sections 196(1) and 353(1)(b), (c) and (2) of the BNS, which relate to promoting enmity, spreading false information, and acts that may disturb public order.
Apart from Iltija Mufti, unidentified individuals have also been named in the FIR for allegedly sharing and amplifying the content online.
Police Say Content Could Disturb Public Order
Officials said preliminary investigation suggested that the content was part of a “deliberate attempt” to circulate separatist narratives through digital platforms.
“The circulation of such material has the potential to incite public disaffection, disturb peace, and undermine national integration,” police said.
They added that the investigation is ongoing to determine intent and trace the wider spread of the video across social media platforms.
Authorities Warn Against Online Circulation of Such Content
Cyber Police Kashmir has also issued a public advisory, warning people against creating, sharing, or promoting unlawful content online.
Police said strict action will be taken against anyone found involved in activities that violate law and affect public order.
Case Linked to Viral Social Media Post
The FIR was registered after the video shared by Iltija Mufti, which featured Syed Ali Shah Geelani, began circulating widely online and came under official scrutiny.
The case remains under investigation at Cyber Police Station Srinagar.
