FTII Students Slam National Award for The Kerala Story, Call Film “A Weapon, Not Cinema”

Kerala Story

A students’ group at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) has strongly criticised the decision to give a national award to the controversial film The Kerala Story, calling it not just disappointing but dangerous. The film’s director, Sudipto Sen, won the Best Director award at the 71st National Film Awards, and the film also received the award for Best Cinematography.

Released in 2023, The Kerala Story sparked outrage for claiming that women from Kerala were forcibly converted and recruited by ISIS. Many, including political leaders and civil society, have accused the film of spreading misinformation and promoting communal hatred.

In a statement issued on August 2, the FTII Students’ Association said, “The Kerala Story is not a film, it is a weapon.” They alleged that the government is rewarding propaganda disguised as cinema because it fits a “majoritarian, hate-filled agenda.”

“The state has once again made its position clear: it will reward propaganda if it supports its narrative,” the statement said. “This film spreads a false story that targets the Muslim community and disrespects a state known for its communal harmony and progressive values.”

The students said awarding such a film was not a neutral act but a political one. “Cinema is a powerful medium,” they wrote. “And when a government body recognises a film that spreads fear and hate, it is not just honouring art — it is encouraging division and violence.”

They warned that recognising such films could lead to more social conflict. “It legitimises violence, encourages future lynchings, and deepens the divide between communities,” the statement added.

They ended by rejecting what they called “Islamophobic propaganda” being given awards. “We will not be silent while the industry we want to join is reshaped to reward lies and bigotry. Giving awards to propaganda does not make it true. It makes it dangerous,” the students said.
