Indian billionaire Gautam Adani has emerged as Asia’s richest person, overtaking Mukesh Ambani, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The latest data shows Adani’s net worth rising to around $92.6 billion, while Ambani’s wealth dropped to approximately $90.8 billion.
The shift comes after a sharp decline in Ambani’s fortune, which reportedly fell by $16.9 billion in 2026, marking one of the biggest losses among Asia’s richest individuals this year.
Oil Prices and Global Tensions Impact Wealth
Experts say global factors, especially rising crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions in West Asia, have significantly impacted Ambani’s business empire. His flagship company, Reliance Industries, operates the world’s largest oil refinery, making it highly sensitive to fluctuations in global energy markets.
The situation worsened due to disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route through which nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes. Ongoing tensions in the region have pushed oil prices higher, affecting refining and petrochemical businesses.
Adani Group Shows Strong Recovery
In contrast, Adani’s conglomerate—focused on infrastructure, logistics, and energy—has shown resilience. His wealth increased by $8.1 billion this year, signaling a strong recovery after a turbulent period.
The group had earlier faced serious allegations from Hindenburg Research in 2023, which accused it of financial irregularities. However, the Securities and Exchange Board of India later cleared the group of major wrongdoing.
Despite ongoing legal scrutiny in the United States related to a separate case, the Adani Group has denied all allegations and maintained its position in global markets.
Indian Billionaires Face Overall Losses
The broader picture shows that India’s richest individuals have collectively lost about $28.1 billion in 2026 due to global instability. Analysts note that sectors linked to energy and international trade have been the most affected.
Globally, Elon Musk continues to top the wealth charts with a massive net worth, followed by Larry Page and Jeff Bezos.
