Giriraj Singh Claims ‘Muslim Organisations Want Islamic Country’, Says UCC Will Be Implemented

Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Saturday stirred fresh political debate after alleging that some Muslim organisations aim to turn India into an Islamic country, while asserting that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Speaking to reporters, Singh said, “Muslim organisations want to make India an Islamic country. This is not possible. ‘One Nation, One Law’, UCC will be implemented in the country during the tenure of PM Narendra Modi’s government.”

UCC gains prominence ahead of Assam elections

Singh’s remarks come as the Bharatiya Janata Party continues to push the UCC as a key political promise, especially in poll-bound Assam.

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated that the party would implement the UCC in the state if re-elected. However, he clarified that the proposed law would not apply to areas under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and tribal communities.

BJP outlines promises in manifesto

Releasing the party’s election manifesto, Sarma said the BJP aims to strengthen development and governance in the state.

“We want to make Assam the brightest state. We don’t want to be dependent; we want to contribute to nation-building,” he said.

He added that the party has made 31 promises, including implementing the UCC (with exemptions), taking action against “love jihad,” and investing ₹18,000 crore in flood management over the next two years.

Election schedule and political contest

Polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam will be held in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4.

The BJP is contesting the elections along with its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front, seeking a third consecutive term in power.

Meanwhile, the Congress is attempting to return to power, setting the stage for a closely watched electoral battle in the state.
