The Government of India has issued a strict advisory asking TV channels, digital platforms, and individuals not to show live or real-time updates of defence operations or the movement of security forces.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting released the advisory stressing that such coverage could put lives at risk and harm ongoing missions.

“Premature disclosure of sensitive information may help hostile elements and put the safety of our forces in danger,” the advisory warned.

The Ministry cited past examples like the Kargil War, 26/11 Mumbai attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking, where real-time reporting negatively affected national interests.

As per the Cable TV Network Rules, 2021 [Clause 6(1)(p)], the media is only allowed to report on anti-terror operations through official briefings until the operations are over.

“No programme should show live coverage of anti-terrorist operations. Media must wait for updates from a designated government official,” the advisory stated.

The Ministry urged everyone, including social media users, to act responsibly and not share unverified or live updates about sensitive military matters.

“This is not just a legal duty but a moral one — to protect our forces and national security,” the government said.

Channels that violate these rules may face legal action under the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021.
