The Grand Mufti of India, Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, has voiced deep concern over the recent implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) by the Central government, urging for a reconsideration of the decision.
In his issued statement, the Grand Mufti said that the Act, which utilizes religion as a criterion for citizenship, contradicts the principles enshrined in the Constitution. He warned against the potential division among citizens that such legislation could breed, highlighting unity and integrity as essential for the nation’s progress and prosperity.
“ By endorsing such legislation, we risk sowing seeds of division among our citizens rather than fostering unity and integrity, which are essential for the progress and prosperity of our nation,” said the Grand Mufti.
Expressing irony in India’s pursuit of global recognition, including endeavours like the aspiration to launch a space station, while simultaneously enacting discriminatory laws, the Grand Mufti cautioned that such actions could tarnish India’s reputation on the international stage and undermine values of inclusivity and pluralism.
He urged the Union government to reconsider its stance on the CAA and take steps to retract this divisive legislation, advocating for upholding ideals of equality and justice upon which the nation was founded. He called for a future where all citizens are treated with dignity and respect, irrespective of their religion or background.
