Humanitarian Catastrophe Looms as Israel Outlaws UNRWA’s Operations in Occupied Palestinian Territories

On Monday, Israel passed two resolutions to ban UNRWA services (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) in occupied Palestinian land. This mandate intended to contraband relief aid in Gaza, West Bank, East Jerusalem and refugee shelters across Palestine. As per reports, the first legislation bans “any activity” by UNRWA in Palestine while the second law labels the agency as a “terror organization”.

The proposed legislation would be applied within 90 days and disrupt the aid distribution in the utmost affected areas, therefore, global dais has been criticizing the step and asking Israel to allow humanitarian assistance for the people of Palestine who are trapped in genocide. Under this new Machiavellian Israeli sanction, the UN General Assembly mandate of 1949 would become completely ineffective in terms of International law, fundamental freedom and human-rights.

In a time when genocide has stepped into its monstrous stage, the ban would affect millions of Palestinians who are wounded, devastated, and have lost their families with no place left to hide and no means to survive.

Criticisms on Boil

UNRWA was founded in 1949 to help war-affected displaced civilians and since then it has been working in education, health care, emergency and social service sectors to provide support to the Palestinian population. Among the 322 aid volunteers who have been assassinated in ongoing genocide within one year, there were around 237 UNRWA workers. Israel targets them not just for providing aid but also for voicing liberation. Israel also blocked the Rafah border to hinder aid-flow in the region, inciting criticisms, thus now its new mandate has boiled-up the concerns.

Reacting to the bill, a UNRWA official said that this bill would severely harm the lives and the future of Palestinians and the rule-based order is inciting the same fears that led to the formation of the United Nations.

“I am deeply concerned by the adoption today by the Knesset of Israel of two laws concerning the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which, if implemented, would likely prevent UNRWA from continuing its essential work in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, as mandated by the UN General Assembly,” UNRWA Secretary General said in an official statement.

Israel’s western allies, like the USA, have also criticized this step and indicated to intervene in the matter. On the other hand, Sally Abi Khalil, Oxfam Regional Director in the Middle East and North Africa said that Israel has bombed Palestinians to death, starved and maimed them and now it’s banning their biggest lifeline of aid. Qatar’s foreign minister Dr. Majid Bin Mohammed Al Ansari said that “stopping support” would result in “disastrous consequences”, because “Israeli massacres have become more than what can be condemned on a daily basis”.

No End Of The Tyranny

Official data reports that more than 2.4 million people have been displaced and 43,000 Palestinians have been murdered by Israel since October 2023.

The Israeli army devastated their homes, hospitals, schools, shelters, families and everything. Palestinians fled to the safest remote regions backwards but no region ensured the guarantee of life, dignity and rights.

The episodes of genocide are a terrible story in itself, no less than a holocaust, and now by prohibiting essential humanitarian aid Israel has paved the way for even more catastrophic horrors.
