A massive political controversy has erupted in West Bengal following the release of a video purportedly featuring Humayun Kabir, Chairman of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP). The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has leveraged the footage to allege a deep-seated conspiracy orchestrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to “buy” minority votes and destabilize the ruling government. However, The Observer Post has not independently verified the authenticity of the video.
TMC Alleges Collaboration Between Kabir and BJP
According to TMC claims, the video captures Kabir expressing his intent to politically defeat Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee “at any cost.” In the alleged recording, Kabir is heard stating that he has held discussions with senior BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, and has been in contact with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). He also purportedly mentions interactions with Mohan Yadav and Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Strategy to Influence Minority Votes
The video allegedly shows Kabir outlining a strategy to influence Muslim voters in the state. He is quoted as claiming that if minority votes shift away from the TMC, it would significantly bolster the BJP’s electoral prospects. Kabir also purportedly states that he could secure between 70 to 80 seats in Muslim-dominated constituencies, provided he receives substantial financial backing.
Alleged Financial Backing and Promises of Position
In one of the more controversial claims, Kabir allegedly mentions the need for approximately ₹1,000 crore to execute his plan, including spending ₹3–4 crore per constituency. He is also heard suggesting that BJP leaders had assured him a senior position, including the possibility of becoming Deputy Chief Minister, if his strategy succeeds.
TMC Calls Video an “Explosive Sting”
The Trinamool Congress shared the video on its official platforms, describing it as an “explosive sting” exposing a “deep-rooted conspiracy” by the BJP to manipulate minority voters in West Bengal. The party has demanded a thorough investigation into the matter, including alleged links to the PMO and the source and intended use of the funds mentioned in the video.
Senior TMC Leaders Condemn Kabir
Senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim strongly criticized Kabir, accusing him of exploiting religious sentiments for political gain. Addressing a press conference, Hakim questioned the intent behind such alleged actions and asserted that the minority community would not be misled. He further accused the BJP of engaging in unethical practices to influence electoral outcomes. Hakim stated:
“Is our sentiment a commodity to be sold? We possess our own intellect, and we will give a fitting reply.”
The TMC has also called for scrutiny of Kabir’s recent political activities, including his use of helicopters for travel, which the party alleges may be linked to undisclosed financial dealings.
Kabir Denies Allegations, Threatens Lawsuit
Responding to the allegations, Humayun Kabir categorically denied any wrongdoing. He claimed that the video was fabricated using artificial intelligence and accused the TMC of orchestrating a smear campaign. Kabir warned that he would initiate a defamation lawsuit seeking ₹2,000 crore in damages if the ruling party fails to substantiate its claims.
