A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned against what he called “dimagi Naxalism”, senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram said he was “proud” to be described as one.
Responding to Modi’s Independence Day speech, Chidambaram posted on X on Sunday, August 16: “I am proud to be a dimagi naxal!”
Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on Saturday, Modi said India had made progress in eliminating armed Naxalism but claimed that a “dimagi Naxal” mindset continued to pose a threat by seeking opportunities to create “violence, unrest” and disorder.
Modi said such people “have to be identified and isolated” and urged that young people be connected with the mainstream.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh also criticised the Prime Minister, saying Modi had earlier used the term “urban Naxals” and was now referring to “dimaagi Naxals”.
“First he called his opponents ‘urban naxals’. Now he calls them ‘dimaagi naxals’. It is a sure sign of his desperation,” Ramesh said in a post on X.
He further alleged that Modi had adopted or implemented several positions previously associated with those labelled “urban Naxals” or “dimaagi Naxals”.
