The Government of India has asked all media channels not to show live videos or give real-time updates about army operations or movement of security forces.
“In the interest of national security, all media platforms must act responsibly and follow the rules,” the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said in an advisory.
The government warned that sharing live details could help enemies and put the lives of soldiers in danger. “Premature disclosure of sensitive information may endanger operational effectiveness and the safety of personnel,” the advisory said.
Officials reminded media houses about past incidents, like the Kargil war and the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, where open media coverage created serious problems.
“Past incidents have shown how important responsible reporting is,” it said.
According to the Cable Television Networks Rules, 2021, media channels are already banned from showing live anti-terror operations. They can only share official updates given by the government.
“Media coverage should be limited to official briefings until operations are over,” the ministry said.
The advisory also warned that channels breaking the rule could face action.
“All stakeholders must stay vigilant and act responsibly in the service of the nation,” said Kshitij Aggarwal, Deputy Director at the Ministry.
The advisory was also sent to TV channel associations and media bodies.
