B. R. Ambedkar’s 136th Birth Anniversary Observed Across India with Tributes

India observes B. R. Ambedkar’s 136th birth anniversary with tributes nationwide.

The country is observing the 136th birth anniversary of B. R. Ambedkar, with tributes pouring in from across India. Several events and commemorations have been organised to honour his legacy as the chief architect of the Constitution and a leading voice for social justice.

In New Delhi, a ceremony was held at the Parliament House complex where leaders and dignitaries paid homage to Babasaheb and remembered his contributions to nation building.

Legacy of social justice and equality

Born on April 14, 1891, in present day Madhya Pradesh, Ambedkar dedicated his life to fighting caste discrimination and securing equal rights for marginalised communities, women, and labourers. His work laid the foundation for a more inclusive and democratic India.

As the principal drafter of the Constitution, he played a central role in embedding values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity into the country’s legal and political framework. His efforts also led to the abolition of untouchability and the introduction of safeguards for historically oppressed communities.

Ambedkar’s contributions extended beyond law into economics, education, and public policy, shaping India’s development trajectory in multiple ways. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1990.

Political leaders reiterate commitment to Constitution

On the occasion, Rahul Gandhi said Ambedkar’s vision of equality and dignity continues to guide India, while warning that constitutional values must be protected from erosion. He pledged to defend these ideals and uphold democratic institutions.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin also paid tribute, emphasising that true progress must be measured through social justice and the advancement of women. He highlighted the importance of preserving India’s pluralistic character.

Senior leaders including P. Chidambaram and Manickam Tagore echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need to uphold constitutional values and democratic processes.

Continuing realities of caste discrimination

Even as the nation celebrates Ambedkar’s legacy, discussions around caste discrimination remain relevant. Voices from the Dalit community point out that while legal protections exist, social inequalities continue in both overt and subtle forms.

Experiences shared by students and scholars highlight how caste-based bias persists in educational and professional spaces, often through exclusion, stereotypes, and questions around merit.

Experts note that while the Constitution provides safeguards and affirmative action, gaps remain in addressing everyday discrimination, especially in institutional settings.
