On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Congress party on Sunday launched a strong criticism of the state of media freedom in India, pointing to the country’s low position in the latest global rankings.

India in ‘Very Serious’ Category, Says Congress

In a statement shared on social media, the party highlighted that India has been ranked 157 in the World Press Freedom Index 2026, placing it in what is described as the “very serious” category.

“A free press is the voice of democracy, but today that voice is under attack,” the Congress said. “India ranks 157 in the World Press Freedom Index 2026… On this day, we stand firmly with every fearless voice that speaks truth to power and fights to protect democracy.”

The party expressed solidarity with journalists across the country, especially those working under pressure or facing risks while reporting on sensitive issues.

Why World Press Freedom Day Matters

Observed every year on May 3, World Press Freedom Day serves as a reminder to governments to uphold their commitment to free and independent media. It is also a day for journalists and media organisations to reflect on challenges related to press freedom and ethics.

The day traces its origins to the Windhoek Declaration, a landmark statement adopted by African journalists in 1991. The declaration called for an independent and pluralistic press, laying the foundation for global advocacy around media freedom.

Following this, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed the observance of World Press Freedom Day in 1993, based on recommendations from UNESCO.

Debate Over Media Freedom Continues

The Congress remarks come amid an ongoing political debate over the condition of media independence in India. While opposition parties and several global watchdogs have raised concerns about restrictions and pressures on journalists, the government has often maintained that India has a vibrant and diverse media ecosystem.

World Press Freedom Day, in this context, not only celebrates the principles of free journalism but also highlights the risks faced by reporters, including threats, censorship, and violence in different parts of the world.
