Iranian Delegation “Minab 168” Arrives in Islamabad for High-Stakes Talks

A senior delegation from Iran, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has arrived in Islamabad for crucial ceasefire negotiations with the United States.

The talks, expected to begin on Saturday, come during a temporary two-week halt in hostilities. However, Iranian officials have made it clear that negotiations will proceed only if their preconditions are met.

Iran Sets Conditions for Dialogue

According to Iranian officials, key preconditions include an immediate halt to Israel’s military actions in Lebanon and progress on releasing Iran’s blocked financial assets.

Speaking after arrival, Ghalibaf stressed Tehran’s cautious approach, saying, “We have goodwill, but we do not have trust,” referring to past experiences with the US.

He warned that if negotiations are used as a “deception operation,” Iran would rely on its own capabilities to secure its national interests.

US Delegation Led by JD Vance

The American side is being led by Vice President JD Vance, who has also reached Islamabad along with senior envoys.

Before the talks, Vance struck a firm tone, saying the US would not be “receptive” if Iran attempts to “play” during negotiations, while reiterating openness to a genuine agreement.

The talks are being held under the broader framework supported by Donald Trump, who had earlier described Iran’s proposal as a “workable basis” for discussions.

Israel-Lebanon Conflict Casts Shadow

The negotiations are taking place against the backdrop of ongoing violence in the region. Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon, particularly in Nabatieh, have reportedly killed several security personnel.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry said the death toll from recent attacks has risen to 357, with fears that the number could increase further as many victims remain unidentified.

The escalation has drawn criticism from international bodies, including the European Union and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, which condemned Israel’s actions, including approval of new settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Pakistan at the Centre of Diplomacy

Pakistan is playing a key mediating role in the crisis, hosting both delegations and facilitating dialogue following the ceasefire announcement earlier this week.

The Iranian delegation includes top officials from political, military, and economic sectors, highlighting the high stakes of the negotiations.
