Israel has launched airstrikes on Iran, hitting military and nuclear sites in what experts say is a dangerous escalation. The attacks caused explosions in parts of Tehran, and officials have stopped all flights at the city’s main airport.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strikes would continue “as long as necessary.”
“We will not stop until our goals are achieved,” Netanyahu said during a televised address.
Iran strongly condemned the attack and warned it would respond. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the strikes were done with support from the United States.
“This is an act of aggression against our country,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The United States, as Israel’s main supporter, will also be responsible for the consequences.”
The U.S. government denied any involvement in the attack. A top American official said, “The United States was not part of the strikes,” but warned Iran not to attack American bases in the region.
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also reacted to the situation. He called on both sides to remain calm.
“We are deeply worried,” said his spokesperson Farhan Haq.
“The world cannot afford another war. We urge both countries to show restraint.”
The airstrikes came while talks were still happening between Iran and the U.S. about Iran’s nuclear program.
