Israel Soldier Smashing Jesus Statue in Lebanon Sparks Outrage; Christian Leaders Condemn ‘Desecration’

Israel confirms probe after a soldier allegedly smashed a Jesus statue in Lebanon, drawing global condemnation and official apology.

An image showing an Israeli soldier allegedly smashing a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon has triggered widespread outrage globally, prompting an apology from Israeli leaders and an official military investigation.

The incident took place near the village of Debel, a predominantly Christian area, where the statue was reportedly part of a crucifix outside a family home.

Israel Confirms Incident, Promises Action

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that the viral image circulating on social media is genuine. In a statement, the military said it views the act “with great severity” and described the soldier’s conduct as inconsistent with its values.

The army added that “appropriate measures” would be taken against those involved and said it is working to restore the damaged statue in coordination with the local Christian community.

Reacting strongly, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was “stunned and saddened” by the incident and condemned it. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also apologised, saying, “We apologise for this incident and to every Christian whose feelings were hurt.”

Local and Religious Leaders Condemn Act

Local residents said the statue was a sacred symbol placed outside a home in Debel. Father Fadi Flaifel, head of the village congregation, strongly criticised the act.

“We totally reject the desecration of the cross, our sacred symbol. It goes against human rights and does not reflect civility,” he said, adding that similar incidents had occurred before.

The episode has also drawn condemnation from Christian groups and religious leaders worldwide, who described it as an attack on a sacred symbol and called for accountability.

Political Reactions and International Backlash

The incident sparked sharp reactions in the United States as well. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee called for “swift, severe, and public consequences.”

Several political figures, including Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz, also condemned the act, describing it as “horrific.”

The controversy comes at a time when public opinion in the US is reportedly shifting, with recent surveys indicating declining support for Israel.

Incident Amid Ongoing Conflict

The act occurred during ongoing tensions between Israel and the armed group Hezbollah. Thousands of Israeli troops remain deployed in southern Lebanon despite a recent ceasefire aimed at pausing weeks of fighting.

The broader conflict has already led to large-scale displacement and casualties on both sides, further intensifying scrutiny of actions by armed forces in the region.
