A delegation of Jamiat Ulana-i-Hind met Joint Commissioner of Police for the Western Range, Jatin Narwal, at his office in Janakpuri on Monday, March 10, to express serious concern over the communal tension that has gripped Uttam Nagar following the death of 26-year-old Tarun Kumar in JJ Colony. The meeting was held on the instructions of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind President Maulana Mahmood Madani and was led by the organisation’s General Secretary, Maulana Mohammad Hakeemuddin Qasmi.
The delegation submitted a detailed memorandum to the police authorities outlining their concerns and demands. Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has also written separately to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Lieutenant Governor and the Commissioner of Delhi Police on the matter.
Muslims Living in Fear, Says Jamiat
The delegation told the senior police official that members of the Muslim community living in the Uttam Nagar area are currently experiencing a climate of fear and anxiety. According to the memorandum, certain communal elements are allegedly attempting to exploit the incident by spreading provocative messages and issuing direct threats against Muslims and their properties in the locality.
The organisation raised particular concern over inflammatory videos and slogans circulating widely on social media that appear to target an entire community rather than the individuals accused in the case. The memorandum also highlighted reports of vandalism, looting and arson targeting the homes of the accused and their neighbours following the incident.
Jamiat Condoles Tarun’s Death, Demands Fair Probe
Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of Tarun Kumar and described his death as deeply unfortunate. At the same time, the organisation stressed that the matter must be investigated in a fair, transparent and impartial manner so that the complete facts of the incident come to light. It noted that local accounts suggest the episode arose from a dispute between two groups but that certain elements are deliberately attempting to give it a communal colour.
The memorandum also raised concern over the bulldozer action reportedly undertaken by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi against the property of one of the accused. Jamiat stated that such action must strictly follow due process of law, as repeatedly emphasised by the Supreme Court of India.
Key Demands Placed Before Police
The organisation placed several demands before the Joint Commissioner, including strict legal action against individuals spreading communal hatred or inciting violence, immediate steps to curb inflammatory and misleading content on social media, adequate security arrangements in JJ Colony and surrounding areas, and a fair investigation into the incidents of vandalism, looting and arson reported in the aftermath of the killing.
Given that the incident coincides with the holy month of Ramzan and the approaching Eid-ul-Fitr, the delegation specifically requested that Muslim residents be provided full protection to open their shops, offer prayers in mosques and perform Eid prayers at Eidgah without fear.
Police Assure Protection, Restrict Entry of Outsiders
Joint Commissioner Jatin Narwal assured the delegation that police are taking all necessary steps to maintain law and order in the area and that strict action will be taken against anyone found spreading hatred or rumours. He informed the delegation that entry of outsiders into the locality has already been restricted and that peace committee meetings are being organised to promote communal harmony.
He also assured the delegation that Muslim residents would receive full protection for their religious activities and routine business operations. During the meeting itself, Narwal contacted the local police station to review the market situation and directed that shops be allowed to open normally while ensuring complete security for shopkeepers.
