The Election Commission of Jammu and Kashmir has announced the schedule for the upcoming assembly elections, which will take place in three distinct phases. These elections, crucial for the region’s democratic process, are set to begin on September 18.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, an official from the Election Commission said, “The first phase of polling will be held on September 18.” This phase will cover significant districts like Pulwama, Anantnag, Shopian, Kulgam, Ramban, Kishtwar, and Doda. The second phase, scheduled for September 25, will focus on Ganderbal, Srinagar, Budgam, Poonch, Reasi, and Rajouri. Finally, the third and final phase will take place on October 1, encompassing districts such as Bandipora, Kupwara, Baramulla, Udhampur, Jammu, Samba, and Kathua.
Security measures have been heightened across the region to ensure a safe voting environment. “We are committed to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections across all phases,” the official added.
The region has not seen assembly elections since 2014, when they were conducted in five phases from November 25 to December 20. Following the elections, the People’s Democratic Party formed a coalition government with the Bharatiya Janata Party. However, the coalition faced numerous challenges, ultimately leading to its dissolution in 2018 when the BJP withdrew its support.
Farooq Abdullah, the National Conference chief, welcomed the decision to hold elections, expressing optimism about ending the central rule in Jammu and Kashmir. He stated, “Today, I thank God that they are deciding it. I am happy that they have preponed it.” Abdullah also emphasized the need for a level playing field, urging the Election Commission to ensure fairness.
The BJP has also welcomed the announcement. J-K BJP president Ravinder Raina expressed gratitude to the Election Commission, saying, “We are highly grateful to ECI for the announcement of assembly elections in J-K.”
Senior CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami praised the Election Commission’s commitment to a full democratic exercise, ensuring equal opportunity for all parties. Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Ravinder Sharma highlighted the need for adequate security and fairness, expressing hope that the Election Commission would address concerns regarding recent administrative changes.
