Militant activities have spread to several districts in the Jammu region this year, following deadly attacks in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch over the past three years. According to security officials, 44 people, including 18 security personnel and 13 militants, have been killed in these attacks. The Doda, Kathua, Reasi, Kishtwar, Udhampur, and Jammu districts have become new areas of concern since April-May 2024, though Rajouri and Poonch have seen a drop in incidents this year.
To counter the growing threat, the army, along with the police and central armed forces, has launched extensive operations in vulnerable areas, especially the dense forests.
“While Rajouri and Poonch have seen a decrease in terror activities, the recent surge in other districts has raised alarm,” said a senior security official.
As per official reports, Doda, Kathua, and Reasi recorded nine deaths each this year, while Kishtwar saw five, and Udhampur, Jammu, Rajouri, and Poonch each had fewer casualties. The victims included 14 civilians, among them seven pilgrims who were killed in an attack on their bus while returning from the Shiv Khouri temple, and three village defence guards (VDGs) who were shot in Udhampur and Kishtwar.
“These attacks have been devastating for the region, especially the loss of innocent lives such as the pilgrims,” said a local official.
Security forces have been actively patrolling in areas where they had previously reduced their presence, particularly at night. “Night patrols and public outreach, including medical camps and interaction with local communities, have increased significantly,” the official added.
The attacks in Rajouri and Poonch, which began in October 2021, have killed over 100 people, including 47 security personnel and 48 terrorists. Authorities hope the increased security measures will restore peace to these once-quiet areas.
“Efforts like ‘Operation Sadbhavana’ are also aimed at building trust and improving relations with the local population,” said a police spokesperson.
