JD Vance Heads to Islamabad for Crucial US-Iran Talks Amid Fragile Ceasefire

JD Vance heads to Islamabad for crucial talks with Iran after ceasefire.

US Vice President JD Vance departed for Islamabad on Friday to lead an American delegation for high-stakes talks with Iran, as efforts continue to stabilise tensions following a two-week ceasefire.

The negotiations come after a pause in the conflict involving the United States and Iran, which escalated earlier this year. Pakistan has positioned itself as a key mediator in the peace process.

Before leaving, Vance expressed optimism about the talks, saying he expected “positive” discussions and added that Donald Trump had given “clear guidelines” for negotiations.

“If the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we’re certainly willing to extend the open hand,” Vance said, while warning that any attempt to “play” the US would be met with a firm response.

Pakistan Facilitates Talks, Eases Visa Rules

In a move to support the dialogue, Pakistan announced visa-free entry for delegates and journalists attending what is being called the Islamabad Talks 2026.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said airlines had been instructed to allow boarding without visas, with immigration authorities issuing visas on arrival.

Officials clarified that the facility applies only to participants from the US and Iran and is limited to the duration of the talks.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had earlier played a role in brokering the temporary ceasefire, paving the way for these negotiations.

Tight Security Across Islamabad

Ahead of the delegates’ arrival, authorities in Islamabad have put in place extensive security arrangements. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reviewed preparations and said hosting the talks was “an honour” for the country.

More than 10,000 security personnel have been deployed across Islamabad and nearby Rawalpindi. The high-security Red Zone has been sealed, with access restricted to authorised individuals only.

A control room has also been set up to monitor the situation, while the military and paramilitary forces are assisting local police in ensuring safety.

Traffic Restrictions and Public Advisory

The Islamabad Police issued a traffic advisory announcing diversions on key routes, including Srinagar Highway and the Expressway, due to the movement of foreign delegations.

Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow official updates as strict checking continues across entry and exit points in the city.

Authorities also declared a public holiday in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to minimise disruption and ensure security during the talks.

High Stakes for Regional Stability

The upcoming negotiations are seen as a crucial step toward a broader peace agreement between Washington and Tehran. Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has confirmed participation, while the US delegation also includes senior envoys working on West Asia diplomacy.

With tensions still high in the region, the Islamabad talks are expected to play a key role in determining whether the ceasefire can hold and evolve into a longer-term settlement.
