A civilian truck driver, Waseem Majeed Mir, was shot and killed after his vehicle failed to stop at a security checkpoint in Baramulla, Kashmir, on February 5.

According to police and army statements, a Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) was set up in response to specific intelligence regarding militant movements. When a suspicious truck was spotted approaching the checkpoint at high speed, the driver ignored multiple warnings to stop and instead accelerated past the post.

The forces said that they pursued the vehicle for 23 km, eventually firing at the truck’s tires near Sangrama Chowk to halt it. Upon stopping, a detailed search was conducted, and the driver, severely injured, was evacuated to the GMC Baramulla hospital. Despite efforts, he was declared dead on arrival.

The deceased has been identified as Waseem Majeed Mir, a 35-year-old resident of Goripora Darpora Bomai Sopore. Police have registered an FIR and moved the truck to the nearest station for further examination. A post-mortem is underway to determine the exact cause of death, and investigations into the driver’s background are ongoing.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors as an investigation is in progress. Senior police officials are at the hospital, and updates will be shared through official channels.
