An interfaith couple from Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj district has gone missing after allegedly leaving their homes following a relationship, prompting protests by members of Hindu organisations who accused the police of inaction and termed the case “love jihad.”
The incident pertains to the Amapur police station area, where the couple reportedly left home on July 6. According to reports, the man is Muslim and the woman is Hindu.
The woman’s family approached the police to file a complaint. Her mother alleged that when she first visited the police station, she was asked to return the next day. She further claimed that when she returned, her complaint was not taken seriously.
Hindu Organisations Stage Protest
On Tuesday, workers associated with the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal and other Sangh Parivar-linked organisations gathered outside Amapur police station and staged a protest, demanding immediate action to trace the woman.
During the protest, VHP functionary Nakul Chaudhary issued a warning while addressing police officials.
“The police has asked for time till the end to bring the girl back. If the girl is not brought back till the end, then there is no need to tell what Bajrang Dal does. Bajrang Dal does not tell, but it does,” he said.
He further said, “The administration and political leaders may have their own compulsions, but we Bajrang Dal workers know how to burn Lanka.”
The remarks have drawn attention as they appeared to threaten violence if the woman is not traced.
Police Assure Action
Responding to the protesters, Amapur Station House Officer Dinesh said police had already initiated action and were actively searching for the couple.
“The police has taken immediate action in this matter and the boy and girl will be found under any circumstances by the end. The police team has been out since night to find them,” he said.
According to the officer, the boy’s mother, brother-in-law and some relatives have been brought in for questioning as part of the investigation.
Police have not officially described the case as “love jihad” and have not confirmed the circumstances under which the couple left home. The investigation is ongoing, and the whereabouts of the couple remain unknown.
