Police in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district have registered a case against a BJP leader for allegedly cheating a man of ₹8.25 lakh by promising him a government job and permission to install tents at Pahalgam during the Amarnath Yatra 2026.
The accused has been identified as Aabid Hussain Nengroo, general secretary of the BJP’s Anantnag district unit and a resident of Krandigam in Bijbehara.
Man Alleges Fraud Over SPO Job, Pahalgam Tents
According to police, a written complaint was filed by Waheed Ahmad Itoo, a resident of Anantnag, alleging that Nengroo used his political influence to promise him a job as a Special Police Officer (SPO) in the J&K Police.
The complainant also alleged that Nengroo promised to arrange official permission for him to install tents at Pahalgam for pilgrims during the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
Police said Itoo alleged that he was induced by these assurances and eventually paid a total of ₹8.25 lakh.
Taking cognisance of the complaint, police registered FIR No. 283/2026 at Anantnag Police Station under Sections 318(4) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
An investigation into the allegations is underway.
BJP Leader Calls Allegations Baseless
Nengroo had approached the Principal District and Sessions Court in Anantnag on August 8, seeking damages over what he described as defamatory allegations made against him by Itoo.
In his petition, Nengroo termed the allegations “baseless” and “unfounded”. He claimed that Itoo had developed a sense of vengeance against him because of the “dignity and respect” he received within the BJP and among the public.
Nengroo has sought an interim order restraining Itoo from making what he described as “defamatory statements” against him.
The court has fixed the next hearing for September 15 and directed Waheed Ahmad Itoo to remain present.
BJP Disciplinary Committee to Decide
BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur said the party’s disciplinary committee would meet following the registration of the case against Nengroo and take a decision on the matter.
Meanwhile, Anantnag Police warned people against falling for promises of government jobs or other official benefits made by individuals claiming to have political or administrative influence.
