A Kashmiri medical student of Karnataka’s Al-Ameen College was allegedly assaulted and threatened to be killed by his seniors.

The incident reportedly happened on Tuesday around 4:00 p.m. when Hameem, a second-year student, had gone to watch a cricket match among the 290 and 2022 batch students. One of his seniors ordered him to stay away from the boundary and he complied and stayed away from the boundary.  Hameem was then confronted by a group of seniors who asked him to leave the place. Upon refusal, the group forced him to sing songs and dance for their entertainment. They further tried to shove Hameem into a car and got aggressive when he tried to record.

Later at night, 6-8 individuals barged into Hameem’s room, allegedly assaulted him and forced him to record an apology video. The attackers warned him not to play cricket until his graduation and threatened to kill him if he didn’t comply with their orders.

Hameem also alleged that he had been intimidated many times previously. He alleged that was intimidated by his seniors during exams last year.

National Convenor of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association condemned the attack and wrote on X, “ We urge the Chief Minister to personally intervene in this matter ensure Swift justice for the victim and take strict action against those responsible to prevent such incidents from recurring in educational institutions. Those found guilty must be immediately expelled from the university to set a strong precedent against ragging and to ensure the safety of all students.”

“Such incidents highlight the alarm in the culture of unchecked ragging and abuse within educational institutions. This is not just an isolated case of violence –it is a failure of the system meant to protect students,” he added.

A police team reached the college to investigate the matter. Hameem said to the officers that he fears for his safety and peace of mind as he has four more years for his graduation and thus does not wish to lodge an FIR. He requested that all the accused should apologise for ragging.
