A newlywed doctor in Kerala briefly stepped away from her wedding celebrations to provide first aid to two catering workers who fell ill during the ceremony.

Dr Shirin Subair, a native of Panoor in Kannur, was attending her wedding to Dr Rijaz when she was called to help two women from the catering team. One had a nosebleed, while the other complained of dizziness and appeared faint.

“Everyone knew I was a doctor, so someone asked me to come and take a look. When I saw the situation, I just did what was needed,” Shirin told a television channel.

Shirin is pursuing her first-year MD in Emergency Medicine at Valluvanad Hospital in Ottapalam. She provided basic first aid to both women at the wedding venue and advised that they be taken to hospital if required.

‘It Was Simply Our Duty’

For the woman with the nosebleed, Shirin advised her to lean forward and pinch the soft part of her nose firmly for 10 to 15 minutes while breathing through her mouth.

The second woman, who was feeling faint, was asked to lie down with her legs elevated.

“These are basic steps to take, giving first aid and then getting them to a hospital,” Shirin said.

The incident was recorded on video at the venue and later circulated widely on social media. Shirin said she did not realise that someone was recording her at the time.

“I saw it; many people forwarded it to me. But I hadn’t noticed anyone recording a video at the time. It was simply our duty, nothing more,” she said.

Doctor Says Helping Was Nothing Extraordinary

Despite the attention the video received, Shirin said she did not consider her actions unusual.

“It’s definitely not a big deal. If we see someone collapse or faint on the road, it’s in our subconscious mind to react,” she said.

She said people should provide whatever help they can during an emergency and then arrange medical care when necessary.

Shirin also stressed the importance of basic first-aid knowledge among the public. She said knowing how to respond during the first few minutes of an emergency can be crucial, especially when professional medical help is not immediately available.

She also highlighted the importance of early CPR, saying delays in providing first aid can reduce a person’s chances of survival.

Husband Also Pursuing Medical Studies

Shirin’s husband, Dr Rijaz, is also pursuing postgraduate medical studies and is specialising in Orthopaedics in Andhra Pradesh.

“Emergency specialists tend to have a quicker reflex to react to such situations,” Rijaz said.

The video of Shirin helping the two workers has since attracted widespread attention online.

For the doctor bride, however, the moment was not about the wedding or the attention that followed. It was simply about helping two people who needed medical assistance.

“It was simply our duty, nothing more,” she said.
