Mamata Banerjee on Monday led a candlelight protest in Kolkata demanding justice for the 12-year-old girl whose alleged rape and murder in Baruipur has sparked outrage across West Bengal.
The march, organised under the banner “Justice for Baruipur,” began outside Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat. Holding candles and placards, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief was joined by senior party leaders, including Dola Sen, Pratima Mondal and Aparupa Poddar, along with women leaders from the party’s Kalighat unit.
Security Tightened During Protest
A large number of state police and central security personnel were deployed around the protest route to maintain law and order.
According to party leaders, security personnel placed barricades to stop the march from moving beyond the lane outside Banerjee’s residence. Protesters briefly pushed through the barricades, creating a tense situation, but the demonstration remained peaceful and concluded shortly afterwards near the residence.

TMC Delegation Meets Victim’s Family
Earlier in the day, a Trinamool Congress delegation visited Baruipur and met the family of the deceased girl to express solidarity and gather details about the incident.
After returning to Kolkata, the delegation briefed Banerjee about their visit. She later joined the candlelight march, reiterating her demand for justice and expressing support for the victim’s family.

The alleged rape and murder of the 12-year-old girl has triggered widespread protests and public anger across West Bengal.
Police have arrested multiple suspects in connection with the case, while the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have also constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the incident.
