The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has demolished the property of a key accused, Nizamuddin, in connection with the Holi murder case in Uttam Nagar, in what authorities described as a zero-tolerance response to violent crime. The action came days after 26-year-old Tarun was beaten to death by a mob on March 4 during Holi celebrations in JJ Colony. Seven people have been arrested so far, including a minor, and the investigation continues under heavy security deployment across the area.
CM Rekha Gupta Condemns the Killing, Promises Justice
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta came down hard on the incident, publicly branding the murder as heartbreaking, reprehensible and shocking. In a post on X, she directed that immediate arrests be made and that justice be delivered swiftly. She expressed solidarity with the bereaved family, saying their young son was gone and their pain was beyond words, and assured them of the government’s full support. Gupta also said that such brutality during a festival like Holi demanded uncompromising action and prayed for strength for the victim’s family.
How a Balloon Triggered a Deadly Mob Attack
According to police, a PCR call was received at around 11.09 at night on March 4, reporting a fight between neighbours from different communities. When police reached the spot, they found that the dispute had started when a young girl playing Holi on her rooftop accidentally dropped a water balloon that landed on a woman from the neighbouring family.
What began as a verbal argument quickly drew members of both families onto the street, and the situation turned violently out of control. Around 20 to 25 people allegedly joined in the attack. A total of eight people were injured across both sides, three from one family and five from the other. Tarun sustained the most serious injuries and died during treatment the following day.
DCP Dwarka Kushal Pal Singh said police investigation had found that the two families had known each other for nearly five decades and had previously had minor disputes over parking and garbage disposal. He warned that some anti-social elements were attempting to give the incident a communal colour and that strict action would be taken against anyone doing so.
SC/ST Act Invoked, Multiple Charges Filed
Police initially registered the case under Sections 110 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. After Tarun’s death, Section 103(1) dealing with murder was added to the FIR. Charges were also invoked under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act. Tarun’s brother Arun Kumar demanded justice and highlighted the sheer scale of the mob that had descended on his brother.
Six Adults and One Minor Arrested; Identity of Accused
Police sources confirmed six adults and one minor have been arrested. The adults have been identified as Umardeen, aged 49, Jumaadin, 36, Mustak, 46, Kamruddin, 36, Muzaffar, 25, and Tahir, 18, all residents of Uttam Nagar. A 17-year-old juvenile was also apprehended. Five arrests were made on the spot, and two more followed based on statements given by the victim’s family.
Massive Security Deployment Across the Area
To prevent any violence, authorities set up a structured security grid across the locality, with DCPs assigned per zone, ACPs per sector and ASIs covering sub-sectors, supplemented by personnel from the Outer and West Districts, along with CRPF and Rapid Action Force units. Police said the law and order situation was fully under control and appealed to residents not to give any attention to rumours circulating in the area.
