Communal violence broke out in Nainital on Wednesday night following reports of a minor girl being sexually assaulted by an elderly man from the Muslim community. The incident triggered widespread anger, leading to vandalism, stone-pelting, and clashes between protesters and police.
According to locals, the accused, a contractor, allegedly lured the girl to his home a few days ago, assaulted her, and later abandoned her on a roadside. The victim’s family filed a police complaint on Wednesday evening, sparking outrage among Hindu groups.
Soon after the news spread, enraged mobs targeted shops owned by Muslims, damaging vehicles and properties. Protesters also pelted stones at a mosque and clashed with police, who resorted to lathi-charge to control the situation.
“The accused has been arrested, but people are angry. We are trying to maintain peace,” said SP Dr. Jagdish Chandra.
Tensions escalated further when the victim was taken for a medical examination at a government hospital where the accused’s son works as a doctor. Protesters alleged bias and demanded a fair investigation.
“The hospital will not give a fair report. The police are protecting the accused,” claimed a protester.
The area remained tense late into the night, with shops shut and heavy police deployment. Protesters continued demonstrations outside the police station, demanding strict action.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely to prevent further violence.
