Mumbai witnessed a shocking incident after four members of the same family died due to suspected food poisoning in the city’s Pydhonie area. The deceased have been identified as Abdullah Dokadia (40), his wife Nasreen Dokadia (35), and their two daughters, Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13).
Police said the family’s condition worsened within hours of eating food at home, leading to multiple deaths despite medical treatment.
What Happened: Dinner, Late-Night Fruit, and Sudden Illness
According to police, the incident took place on the night of April 25. The family had dinner with relatives at around 10:30 pm. After the meal, the relatives left for their homes.
Later in the night, between 1:00 am and 1:30 am, the four family members reportedly ate watermelon. By early morning, around 5:30 am, all of them began experiencing severe symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea.
“They were initially treated by a local doctor and then shifted to JJ Hospital,” a police official said.
Despite medical care, the younger daughter died at around 10:15 am. The father passed away later that night, while the mother and elder daughter also died during treatment.
Police Investigation and Medical Testing
An Accidental Death (AD) case has been registered at JJ Marg Police Station. Officials said the exact cause of death is still not confirmed.
Food samples, including watermelon and leftover food items like biryani, have been sent for forensic testing. Postmortem examinations have been completed, but final conclusions are awaited after histopathology reports.
“The exact cause of suspected food poisoning will be confirmed only after detailed medical reports,” police said.
Possible Cause Still Unclear
Preliminary statements suggest that the family may have consumed biryani before eating watermelon, but investigators have not ruled out other causes. Officials are also examining whether contamination occurred in food or water.
Authorities are treating the case as a serious medical and forensic investigation due to the sudden nature of the deaths.
Similar Incident in Jharkhand Raises Concern
In a separate incident, one child died and 18 others fell ill in Jharkhand’s Giridih district after allegedly consuming street food such as golgappa and chaat. The case has triggered an investigation by local health officials.
