An Indian Muslim auto-rickshaw driver is being widely praised on social media after he returned a large amount of money mistakenly transferred to him by a passenger, turning a stressful mistake into a story of honesty and kindness.

The incident came to light after Shubham Gune, founder and CEO of Mumbai-based advertising agency Hinglish, shared the experience on LinkedIn. His post quickly gained attention, with many users applauding the driver’s honesty.

According to Gune, the incident happened in Bengaluru when he was rushing to attend an early morning meeting with an international client. Running late for a 7 a.m. meeting, he took an auto-rickshaw and paid the fare through Google Pay without carefully checking the amount.

The ride cost only ₹156, but in a hurry, Gune accidentally transferred ₹15,682 — almost 100 times more than the actual fare.

Driver Waited to Return the Money

Gune said he realised something had gone wrong only after finishing a difficult client meeting, which he described as disappointing. When he stepped outside, he was surprised to find the auto driver, identified as Altaf, still waiting at the same spot.

Instead of keeping quiet about the mistake, Altaf informed him about the extra payment and returned the entire amount.

What moved Gune even more was that the driver reportedly refused to deduct even the original fare from the refund.

“He said every day begins anew, and there was no reason to ruin someone else’s day because of an honest mistake,” Gune wrote in his LinkedIn post.

In another part of the post, Gune recalled Altaf telling him, “It’s the start of the day for both of us, sir,” after noticing he was already having a stressful morning.

A Gesture That Restored Faith in Humanity

Touched by the driver’s honesty, Gune later transferred ₹500 to Altaf as a gesture of gratitude, which included the fare for the ride and a small token of appreciation.

The entrepreneur also shared an unexpected update to the story. Days after what he thought was a failed business meeting, the international client contacted him again and decided to move forward with working together.

“The moment the news landed, my mind went straight back to that 7 am footpath,” Gune wrote, remembering Altaf’s kindness on one of his toughest mornings.

Social Media Users Praise Altaf

The story has resonated widely online, with many users saying Altaf’s actions restored their faith in people.

Several commenters said honesty matters most when someone has the opportunity to benefit from another person’s mistake. Others described the incident as proof that kindness and integrity often appear in ordinary moments without expectation of reward or recognition.
