“Muslim-dominated areas in Delhi lack basic amenities, creating ‘ghettos,'” says SPECT Foundation report

On Monday, the SPECT Foundation released a report titled “Neglected Citizens: Lack of Civic Amenities in Muslim-Dominated Areas of Delhi.” The report focuses on areas like Jamia Nagar, Zakir Nagar, and Abul Fazal Enclave, where there is a shortage of basic civic facilities and government negligence.

According to the report, these areas have been systematically transformed into “Muslim ghettos,” leading to a rapid population increase but no development in essential infrastructure. There is a lack of schools, mohalla clinics, and government hospitals, and the ones that exist are under-resourced. The report also highlights poor waste management, unsanitary conditions, and ongoing issues with roads, open drains, water, and electricity.

Senior journalist Prashant Tandon said, “This report can serve as a basis for future plans. The lack of facilities here is more apparent compared to other areas. It’s not just a civic issue but also a political one.”

Social activist Syeda Hameed, who has lived in the area since 1969, said, “This area was more diverse before, but after the Babri demolition, Gujarat riots, and Delhi violence, it became a ghetto. The report clearly shows that the residents have been isolated, with increased police surveillance and pressure.”

The report was released at the Syedain Manzil in Gulmohar Avenue, Jamia Nagar.
